Guard dog training just isn’t a one step procedure. If you are a keen do it yourselfer and are into making cabinets, book cases, in fact anything that requires joining two pieces of timber together, take a serious look at the Festool Domino Joining System.

I have just completed the frame of an 1800mm high x 900mm wide display cabinet quickly and easily. I was able to adjust the height and depth of the mortises through the flick of a switch. It makes perfect mortises every time! I have to say it simply is “one cool tool”

I have not used the full capabilities of the Festool Domino to this point, but I am discovering new uses for it every time.

What I like most about the Festool Domino is that the tenons (biscuits) are much longer than the width used when joining timber with a conventional biscuit joiner.

For example depending on the size of the timber the overall length of a Domino tenon ranges from 30mm to 50mm. In other words there is a tenon of between 15mm – 25mm inserted into each piece of wood, unlike the conventional biscuit where you have around 10 mm inserted into each side of a join.

The tenon cannot rotate within the mortise, so it is as Festool call it “100% rotation-proof and far stronger than either biscuits or dowels”. It also has a large gluing surface area for extra strength. Therefore, I am assured of much stronger mortise and tenon joins.

So what can you do with the Festool Domino?

Cut mortises long enough to take anything from a 30mm – 50mm tenon.

Adjust the width of the mortise for a perfect fit, or have a little movement either side of the tenon. I find having the mortise a little wider than the tenon makes it easier when lining up two pieces of timber for a perfect fit.

Cut mortises in an instant thanks to the oscillating turning movement of the cutter blade. Fingers are well out of the way!

It has a pivoting fence that allows you to cut mortises at different angles 0, 22.5, 45, 67.5, and 90 degrees. For example I cut angled mortises across the joins of the display cabinet doors to further strengthen them.

The fence height adjustment provides accurate stops for locating the mortise openings in the centre of the material for which you are cutting mortises – 16, 20, 22, 25, 28 and 40 mm thick material.

The viewing window allows you to see the marks on your timber so you are assured of accurate and precise joins every time.

Quick, precise adjustment for 5 different mortising depths depending on the size of the tenon being used.

South Africa has two species of rhino, the Black rhino (Hook-lipped rhino) and the White rhino (Square-mouthed rhino). Of the two species, the white rhino has the highest population, numbering +- 4000 in the Kruger National Park and only 400 black rhino. It’s hard to believe that less than 100 years ago there were fewer white rhino’s than black rhino’s. The reason for such a low population of rhino in the park was as a result of excessive hunting and poaching. In the mid-70s’ a huge effort was made to boost their numbers by introducing rhino from Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve into the southern part of the Kruger National Park. Another possible reason for the black rhino being so low in numbers could be the fact that they are very anti-social compared to the white rhino which are often seen in large herds of 10 – 15 and even more. Black rhino breed less frequently as a result of being so anti-social.

White Rhino:

Latin name: Ceratotherium simum

Weight: Adult males 2 000 – 2 500 kg, adult females 1 600 – 1800 kg.

Age: +- 45 years.

Gestation: 16 months.

Feeding and territoriality:

White Rhino are grazers. They have very broad, flat mouths which makes it possible to chew off large tufts of grass while feeding. They spend a lot of their time grazing in the early morning and late afternoon as well as during the night. On warm days they move into the shade to sleep or cool down in mud wallows or dams.

White Rhino bulls are very territorial and on a daily basis they patrol their territories, chasing out intruding territorial bulls, as well as scent-marking the area to show its’ presence. The male scent-marks by spray-urinating on trees and on the ground. After urinating on the ground the bull often drags his feet over the urine covered sand to spread it over a larger area. The urine under the feet also helps to spread the males’ scent even further as he walks through his territory. The bull also has a number of middens within his area. A midden is a large collection of dung left by the rhino in the same spot. Every day the bull will try re-mark as many of these as possible. After dropping fresh dung into the midden, the bull drags his feet over the dung to break it up into smaller pieces, often spreading it out to increase the size of the midden. Just as he does with spay-urinating, he spreads the scent of the dung under his feet when walking through his territory.

During the dry winter season or drought the more dominant male will often allow neighbouring territorial bulls that have no water in their territories to enter his territory for a drink of water, as long as they leave right after drinking.

The females and young sub-ordinate males that are not territorial wonder quite freely through the different male territories.

Reproduction:

The female White rhino gives birth to a single calf after a gestation of about 16 months. They are often seen accompanied by two or three generations of their own young. The female often chases her older calves away before giving birth to another calf. After 3 or 4 months when the newborn is strong on its legs, the mother will allow the older calves to re-join her once again. The female calves will often spend most of their lives with their mother. Male calves tend to wonder off a bit more the older they get, eventually leaving their mother to try establish their own territories.

Senses:

White Rhino have extremely poor eyesight but are very capable seeing moving objects. They have an excellent sense of smell and hearing. A rhino’s ears are always moving to pick up any sound made around it. Even while sleeping their ears still move to pick up any sound.

Norman Rockwell (New York, February 3, 1894 – Stockbridge, Massachusetts, November 8, 1978) was a painter and illustrator American. He died at age 89, as a result of emphysema.

Rockwell was very popular in the United States, especially because of the 321 covers of The Saturday Evening Post has done for more than four decades, and illustrations of scenes from American life in small towns.

He painted the portraits of Presidents Eisenhower, John Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson and Richard Nixon, as well as other important world figures such as Gamal Abdel Nasser and Jawaharlal Nehru. One of his last works was the portrait of singer Judy Garland in 1969.

His drawings and paintings are famous for their thoroughness and accuracy of line and color developed capacity because of shyness in adolescence phase due to club feet who had spent as an observer of school friends, enjoying thus draw them because, according to him “Everyone has his talent and my draw is”.

The thoroughness of the work in the production of Rockwell is also very famous, he for eternity did all the shares in separate drawings, sketch the idea, clothing and soon after everything together. In 1937 he went to shoot and make your drawings from photographs obtained by making drawings in black and white and then study the possibilities of colors and textures. He liked to give special attention to facial expressions, capturing the expressions of an accurate way and caricatured, especially as it pertains to children’s expressions for the first thirty years of his career.

Norman Rockwell (3 February 1894 to 8 November 1978), was an American artist and illustrator, drew forty years been the headlines for The Saturday Evening Post.
